Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (60g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×13 inch pan with parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang for easy brownie removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and sugar together until smooth and glossy, about 2 minutes by hand or 1 minute with a mixer.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually fold this dry mixture into the wet batter using a spatula. Stop when no streaks remain.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with an offset spatula. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release air bubbles.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Check at 25 minutes by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out with moist crumbs but not wet batter.
  7. While brownies bake, prepare the orange cream drizzle: beat softened cream cheese until smooth. Add powdered sugar, orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla. Mix until creamy and pipeable but not runny.
  8. Once brownies are out and slightly cooled (about 15 minutes), drizzle the orange cream in concentric circles across the surface using a piping bag or plastic bag corner.
  9. Using a toothpick or skewer, drag lines from the center outward to the edges to create the spider web effect.
  10. Chill the brownies for 30 minutes to set the drizzle before slicing.

Notes

If the orange cream drizzle is too soft, chill it in the fridge for 5 minutes before piping. Use a sharp knife warmed under hot water and dried to cut clean squares without dragging the drizzle. For dairy-free, substitute butter and cream cheese with plant-based alternatives. Almond flour can be used for gluten-free brownies but expect a slightly crumbly texture. Practice piping the spider web on parchment paper if nervous.
