Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 packets (approximately 21g total) unflavored gelatin powder
  • Red Layer: 1 cup (240 ml) cranberry or cherry juice
  • Red Layer: 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka
  • Red Layer: 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar
  • White Layer: 1 cup (240 ml) sweetened condensed milk
  • White Layer: 1/2 cup (120 ml) water (divided as 1/4 cup for gelatin bloom and 1/4 cup to mix with condensed milk)
  • White Layer: 1 tablespoon (10g) unflavored gelatin powder
  • Blue Layer: 1 cup (240 ml) blueberry or grape juice
  • Blue Layer: 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka
  • Blue Layer: 2 tablespoons (25g) granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Red Layer: Sprinkle 1 packet (7g) of unflavored gelatin over 1/4 cup (60 ml) cold cranberry or cherry juice. Let it bloom for 5 minutes. Gently heat on low until gelatin dissolves without boiling. In a bowl, combine remaining 3/4 cup (180 ml) juice, 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka, and 2 tablespoons sugar; stir until sugar dissolves. Mix in dissolved gelatin. Pour into shot glasses or molds filling about one-third. Refrigerate until firm, about 1 hour.
  2. Make the White Layer: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon (10g) gelatin over 1/4 cup (60 ml) cold water. Let sit 5 minutes. Heat gently until dissolved. In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup (240 ml) sweetened condensed milk with 1/4 cup (60 ml) water. Slowly whisk in gelatin mixture until smooth. Carefully spoon over the red layer to cover completely, pouring slowly to avoid mixing colors. Chill until firm, about 1 hour.
  3. Prepare the Blue Layer: Bloom 1 packet (7g) gelatin in 1/4 cup (60 ml) blueberry or grape juice for 5 minutes. Warm gently until dissolved. In a bowl, combine remaining 3/4 cup (180 ml) juice, 1/2 cup (120 ml) vodka, and 2 tablespoons sugar. Stir until sugar dissolves, then add gelatin mixture. Carefully pour over the white layer, filling remaining space. Refrigerate until fully set, about 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  4. Serving: Once set, layers should be distinct and firm. Run a knife gently around edges if using molds, then serve chilled. Keep refrigerated until serving to maintain shape.

Notes

For non-alcoholic versions, replace vodka with sparkling water or lemon-lime soda. Use coconut milk instead of sweetened condensed milk for a dairy-free white layer. Bloom gelatin properly by sprinkling over cold liquid and letting sit 5 minutes before warming. Heat gelatin gently without boiling to preserve setting ability. Let each layer chill and set completely before adding the next to avoid mixing colors. Shots can be made a day ahead and stored covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. Avoid freezing unless a slushy texture is desired.
