A fun and festive recipe for red, white, and blue layered jello shots perfect for 21+ celebrations like Independence Day. These shots feature distinct, vibrant layers with a creamy boozy middle and are easy to prepare with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) cherry or strawberry-flavored gelatin
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water (for red layer)
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vodka (for red layer)
  • 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) unflavored gelatin
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water (for white layer)
  • ½ cup (120 ml) sweetened condensed milk
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vodka (for white layer)
  • 1 package (3 oz / 85 g) blue raspberry-flavored gelatin
  • 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water (for blue layer)
  • ½ cup (120 ml) vodka (for blue layer)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Red Layer: In a heatproof bowl, pour 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water over the cherry gelatin powder. Stir briskly for about 2 minutes until fully dissolved. Add ½ cup (120 ml) vodka and mix gently. Pour the mixture evenly into your shot molds or cups, filling about one-third of each. Chill in the fridge for 30–45 minutes, or until the layer is firm but slightly tacky to the touch.
  2. Make the White Layer: While the red layer sets, dissolve the unflavored gelatin in 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water, stirring continuously. Once dissolved, add the sweetened condensed milk and ½ cup (120 ml) vodka. Stir until smooth. Gently pour this mixture over the red layer, using the back of a spoon held just above the red layer to avoid mixing colors. Return to the fridge and chill for another 30–45 minutes, until set.
  3. Prepare the Blue Layer: Repeat the gelatin dissolving process with the blue raspberry gelatin and 1 cup (240 ml) boiling water. Stir until smooth, then add ½ cup (120 ml) vodka. Carefully layer this final blue mixture over the white layer, again pouring slowly to maintain clean lines. Chill the shots for at least 1 hour, until fully firm.
  4. Serving: Once all layers are set, gently pop the jello shots out of the molds or serve directly in the cups. They should hold their shape with distinct, vivid red, white, and blue layers.

Notes

Use boiling water to dissolve gelatin fully. Chill each layer until firm but slightly tacky before adding the next to prevent color bleeding. Pour each layer slowly over the back of a spoon to keep layers distinct. Use a smooth, neutral vodka like Tito’s for best flavor. Adjust vodka amount carefully as too much alcohol can prevent gelatin from setting. Store in fridge and consume within 24-48 hours. For dairy-free version, substitute sweetened condensed milk with coconut cream or almond milk. Non-alcoholic versions can use sparkling water or lemon-lime soda instead of vodka.
