A simple and satisfying slow cooker apple butter recipe with warm spices like cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, perfect for cozy seasonal snacking and versatile uses.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds firm apples (Granny Smith and Fuji mix), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (dark preferred)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop about 4 pounds of apples into roughly 1-inch pieces (about 15 minutes).
  2. Add chopped apples, brown sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice into the slow cooker. Stir gently to mix.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours (or on high for 4-5 hours if in a hurry).
  4. Around hour 6, stir gently to prevent sticking.
  5. When cooking is complete, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth or to desired texture.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract and adjust sweetness with additional brown sugar if desired.
  7. Let cool before transferring to clean jars. Refrigerate and use within 2 weeks or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

If apple butter is too thick after blending, stir in a splash of apple cider or water to loosen. Skim off any foam during cooking for a clearer product. Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor. Lemon juice helps preserve color and adds brightness. Can be made on stovetop in about 2 hours with frequent stirring. Adjust spices and sweetness to taste. Freeze leftovers for longer storage.
