A simple and flavorful slow cooker recipe for tender BBQ pulled pork sliders perfect for feeding a crowd with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 pounds pork shoulder (pork butt), trimmed of excess fat
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 1/2 cups BBQ sauce (e.g., Sweet Baby Ray’s or homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: a few dashes of hot sauce
  • Slider buns or small dinner rolls
  • Pickles or coleslaw for topping

Instructions

  1. Pat the pork shoulder dry with paper towels. Combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder (if using), salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork.
  2. Pour 1 cup of chicken broth or water into the slow cooker. Place the seasoned pork shoulder fat side up in the slow cooker. Add apple cider vinegar around the pork.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours or on HIGH for 4-5 hours until pork is fall-apart tender.
  4. Shred the pork using two forks, discarding any large pieces of fat.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix BBQ sauce, honey or brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and optional hot sauce. Pour over shredded pork and stir to coat.
  6. Return the sauced pork to the slow cooker on LOW for 30 minutes to warm through and meld flavors.
  7. Slice and optionally toast slider buns. Pile pulled pork onto buns and top with pickles or coleslaw. Serve immediately.

Notes

Trim excess fat but leave some marbling for juiciness. Use broth or water in the slow cooker to keep pork moist. Cook on LOW for best texture. Shred pork while warm. Adjust BBQ sauce quantity gradually to avoid sogginess. Leftovers are great on baked potatoes or nachos. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or serve over lettuce wraps or baked sweet potatoes.
