A comforting breakfast sandwich featuring crispy golden bread, melted cheese, and a perfectly fried egg with a runny yolk.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or white bread)
  • 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix of melting cheeses)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional add-ons: crispy bacon, sautéed spinach, avocado slices, or hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the skillet over medium heat for a couple of minutes.
  2. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
  3. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, into the skillet. Lay the cheese slices on top.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side up.
  5. Cook the sandwich for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Press gently with a spatula for even cooking.
  6. Move the grilled cheese to a plate. Add a small pat of butter to the skillet and crack the egg into the pan. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 2-3 minutes until the whites are set but the yolk is still runny.
  7. Slide the fried egg onto the grilled cheese sandwich. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

Use room temperature butter for even spreading and a golden crust. Preheat the skillet to prevent sticking. Cook the egg on medium heat for a perfectly set white and runny yolk.
