This recipe delivers perfectly crispy air fryer French fries with a fluffy inside using simple ingredients and a quick method. Ideal for a healthier alternative to deep-fried fries with a satisfying crunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large russet potatoes (about 1.5 pounds / 700 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • Sea salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: ¼ teaspoon paprika or smoked paprika
  • Cold water for soaking

Instructions

  1. Wash and peel the potatoes, then cut into uniform sticks about ¼ inch (6 mm) thick.
  2. Soak the cut potatoes in cold water for at least 30 minutes (up to 2 hours) to remove excess starch.
  3. Drain and thoroughly dry the potatoes using clean kitchen towels or paper towels.
  4. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Toss the dried potato sticks with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, sea salt, black pepper, and optional spices ensuring an even coating.
  6. Arrange the fries in a single layer inside the air fryer basket without overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary.
  7. Cook for 15-18 minutes, shaking or flipping the fries every 5 minutes for even browning.
  8. Check for crispiness and golden color; add 2-3 more minutes if needed, watching closely to avoid burning.
  9. Remove fries and season immediately with additional salt if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

Soaking and drying the potatoes thoroughly is crucial for crispiness. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket to prevent steaming. Shake or flip fries halfway through cooking for even browning. Adjust cooking time based on your air fryer model. For extra crunch, try the double crisp method by cooking at 350°F for 10 minutes then 400°F for 5 minutes.
